ABOUT NEW ZEALAND AND YOUR STAY AT SILVERPINE LODGE

Visitors Visa:
Citizens of a visa free country and staying less than 3 months, do not need a visitors visa. Visitor free countries include Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, the European Union, Mexico, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, the United States of America, and other countries. Please check with Immigration New Zealand for other countries on the visa free list.

Luggage Allowance on International/Domestic Flights:
There is a large difference between the baggage allowance on
International and Domestic flights in New Zealand. Some passengers are caught with too much luggage when traveling between domestic terminals in New Zealand. As a consequence the airline charges them for extra baggage weight accordingly. Please check your baggage allowance on all of your flights with your airline or travel agent before leaving your country.

Climate:
The Wanaka region enjoys four seasons in the southern hemisphere. The warm summer months can last from January to March. The winter can start as early as June and continue through October. Due to dynamic alpine weather, we suggest that you dress in layers of clothes. Also, with a very clear atmosphere, packing sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen lotion are highly advisable.

Banking and currency:
Cash and travellers cheques can be exchanged for New Zealand dollars at banks through out the country. Banks are open between 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, except on holidays.
Wanaka has major banks as well as ATM machines, which allow you to withdraw money only in New Zealand Dollars. Most places, including major supermarkets, accept credit cards. Preferred cards are Mastercard and Visa.

Public Telephones and Cellphones:
Most public telephones accept phonecards. Many petrol, stationary, foodshops, and tourist retail outlets sell phonecards as well as international callcards.

Another option is to rent a SIM card or cellphone at main international airports in New Zealand. Please be aware of charger adaptability. The power voltage in New Zealand is 220V/240V, 60 cycles.

Internet Access
Internet centers and cafes are dotted throughout the country, including in small towns. At Silverpine we have internet facilities in the
library which guests are welcome to use. Please be aware that with
mountains surrounding us, broadband has yet to be an option.

Medical Attention and Pharmacies
The emergency telephone number throughout the whole country is 111. Wanaka has two pharmacies and two medical centers.

Tipping
Tips are not automatically included in restaurant or hotel bills. However through out New Zealand, they are always appreciated.

Safety of Personal Items
Please use common sense while travelling.  We recommend that you do not leave anything visible in your vehicle.  At some rest and walk areas, you may think that you are the only ones there, but even if you are going for a 3 minute walk, please carry your important items with you:  passport, wallet, camera, etc.
